Don't miss this great opportunity to hear details of the Governor's budget proposal and how it will impact California's Schools. Experts from SchoolServices will be on hand again to walk us through the budget proposal along with a variety of skill building sessions.

4 p.m. - PR Bootcamp
New and experienced members are welcome to attend this two-hour session reviewing the basics of school PR. Hear from experienced members on how to deal with media relations, crisis communication, and playing your part in student achievement. This session is FREE to all members registered for the conference.
Thursday, Jan. 17

9 a.m. - State Finances & The Governor's Budget Proposal - presented by School Services of California
School Services of California President Ron
Bennet will present an overview of California's education finance system and review the Governor's budget proposal for 2008-09. With the state projecting more than a $14 billion shortfall this year you won't want to miss this analysis of the budget picture and strategies you can use to communicate the situation to your community.
10:45 a.m. - Ideas for the Year of Education: The Little Hoover Commission
The state's Little Hoover Commission is a bipartisan group charged with
making government more accountable and efficient. This year, the panel chose to look at California's accountability model. Commission Executive Director Stuart Down will provide CalSPRA with an overview of the group's efforts and possible recommendations.

1:30 p.m. - California Department of Education Update
CDE Director of Communications Ann Bancroft will moderate a panel of CDE officials to provide CalSPRA with updates in several areas: Andrea Ball, deputy superintendent of the Government Affairs Branch, will provide updates on legislation and NCLB; Rachel Perry, administrator of the Evaluation, Research, and Analysis Unit in the Policy and Evaluation Division, will provide updates on what is new with API and AYP; and Deb Sigman, director of the Standards and Assessment Division, will provide updates on testing.

3 p.m. - Update on Legal Trends Facing California Schools - presented by Kronick Moskovitz Tiedemann & Girard
The legal team of Ann Murray and Diana Halpenny will provide an update on legal issues facing our schools and communication professionals. An
overview will be offered of common legal questions with more details on
the latest trends and impacts of new legislation.
5 p.m. - Break
5:30 p.m. - Reception - sponsored by the California School Boards Association
Dinner for the evening is available at nearby restaurants or a group option
will also be offered.

Change
California School Board Association President Paul
Chatman will join former school
board member and communication expert Susan Aronson and current Sacramento
area school board members for a discussion on the expectations of communication
staffs and strategies for working together to reach district goals.
9:45 a.m. - Break
10 a.m. - Education Reporters Sound Off
Reporters and editors from Sacramento's top media outlets will take part
in a moderated discussion on covering schools. Find out what the experts
say about pitching positive stories, handling emergencies, and when media
should be allowed on campuses. Confirmed to attend so far are the Sacramento
Bee's Education Editor Tama Adamek, Sac Bee Education Reporters Kim Minugh
and Laurel Rosenhall, and Capital Public Radio News Director Joe Barr.
